Introduction to Tuberculosis (TB)

Diagnostic Tests for Tuberculosis

The TB Plus test, also known as PK0449-TB PLUS, combines three key diagnostic methods to provide a comprehensive evaluation of TB infection: AFB Stain, AFB Culture, and TB PCR. AFB Stain
The AFB (Acid-Fast Bacilli) stain involves staining sputum samples to visualise the presence of Mycobacterium tuberculosis. The bacteria resist decolourisation by acid-alcohol, making them appear brightly coloured under a microscope. This method provides a preliminary diagnosis but is less specific compared to other tests.
AFB Culture
AFB culture involves growing Mycobacterium tuberculosis from a sputum sample in a laboratory. This test is considered the gold standard for TB diagnosis as it confirms the presence of the bacteria and allows for drug susceptibility testing. However, cultures can take several weeks to provide results, which may delay treatment.
TB PCR
The TB PCR (Polymerase Chain Reaction) test detects the genetic material of Mycobacterium tuberculosis in sputum samples. This molecular technique is highly sensitive and provides rapid results, often within a few hours, making it valuable for early diagnosis and treatment initiation.

The TB Plus test is recommended for individuals who are suspected of having active TB, especially if they have symptoms such as a persistent cough, weight loss, or night sweats. It is also useful for:
