Aluminium test

The aluminium that enters the body through normal dietary intake gets eliminated completely through excretion, which is achieved through prompt filtration by the kidneys, but patients with end-stage kidney disease who are undergoing dialysis are prone to aluminium toxicity owing to the lack of the normal functioning of the kidneys. Others with metallic prosthetic implants are also at a risk of developing metal toxicity. Therefore, an aluminium test is ordered to check for the levels of aluminium in the blood.

Why is the test performed?

The test is useful for monitoring aluminium toxicity in patients undergoing dialysis and also for monitoring the working condition of aluminium metal implants in the patient’s body.

When is the test ordered?

The test may be recommended when aluminium toxicity is suspected in an individual owing to the following signs and symptoms:
  • Nausea
  • Vomiting
  • Abdominal pain
  • Fatigue
  • Altered mental state.
  • How is the sample collected?

A blood sample is collected from a vein in the arm.

How to prepare for the test?

No special preparation is required prior to the test.
