Amylase

The amylase enzyme is produced in the pancreas and is also present in the saliva. It helps in the digestion of carbohydrates. Any disease, injury or inflammation in the pancreas may result in the release of amylase into the blood. Amylase is usually measured in a blood sample, but a urine sample can also be used to measure amylase levels in the body.


Why is the test performed?

An amylase blood test may be ordered for diagnosing and monitoring acute and chronic pancreatitis. The test may also be ordered to detect other disorders of the digestive tract including pancreatic pseudocyst.

When is the test recommended?

An amylase test may be recommended if the patient shows signs and symptoms pertaining to a pancreatic disorder, such as :
  • Loss of appetite
  • Fever
  • Abdominal pain.
  • How is the sample collected?

    A blood sample is collected from a vein in the arm.

    How to prepare for the test?

    No special preparation is required for this test.
