ANTI-GBM Antibodies (IF method)

The glomerular basement membrane in the kidneys helps in the filtration of waste products. The antibodies that are produced against this membrane are known as the anti-glomerular basement membrane antibodies. These antibodies induce kidney damage by attacking the capillaries in the glomerular basement membrane. When this happens, the functioning of the kidneys gets affected owing to which proteins and blood leak into the urine. Anti-GBM antibodies target the basement membrane of the lungs and damage the lungs as well. The test measures anti-GBM antibodies in the blood.
