Free T3 or FT3 Test

The thyroid gland produces triiodothyronine (T3) and thyroxine (T4) hormones in the body. These hormones regulate metabolism and other functions in the body. Bulk of the T3 hormone is bound to proteins and the remaining circulates freely in the blood. Free T3 test or FT3 Test measures only free T3 hormone in the blood.


Why the test is ordered?

The test helps in assessing thyroid function and is mainly recommended to help diagnose hyperthyroidism and monitor treatment pertaining to thyroid issues. The test may be ordered when free T4 level is not adequate in the body.

When is the test ordered?

The test may be recommended following an abnormal TSH test. The test may also be recommended if symptoms are indicative of hyperthyroidism, particularly when the free T4 levels are not adequate in the body. The signs and symptoms include
  • Increased heart rate
  • Anxiety
  • Weight loss
  • Muscle weakness
  • Insomnia
  • Tremors in the hand
  • Increased light sensitivity
  • Visual disturbances
  • Puffiness around the eyes
  • Bulging of the eyes
  • How is the sample collected?

    A blood sample is collected from a vein in the arm.
