How to Kill the Sugar Addiction

Sugar cravings can make a person feel like an addict because it can be really hard to get over the taste. Furthermore, with almost every beverage and food product packed with this ingredient, it can be a hard task to win this fight.

The withdrawal symptoms are quite similar to that of an addictive drug and can cause a person to suffer from fatigue, muscle aches, depression, and irate behavior.

Most of the time, the craving can be due to an imbalance in blood sugar levels or a lack of some nutrient or other in the body. So, calling quits to the food completely can be difficult. Irrespective of everything, too much of sugar in our diet can be harmful and the only solution is to cut it down to bare minimum.

Hence, here are some tips to help you kill the sugar addiction smoothly, without the side-effects.

Increase magnesium, zinc, and chromium in your diet

Magnesium, zinc, and chromium are minerals that can help curb your sugar addiction. Magnesium deficiency is one of the leading causes of craving sugar and it can be balanced by consuming foods like nuts, brown rice, and dark leafy vegetables. Zinc deficiency can create imbalance in insulin and glucose levels, one of the leading causes for diabetes. Hence, to make up for it, you can consume pumpkin seeds, pastured eggs, or zinc obtained from animal sources since they do not contain phytates, antioxidant compounds found in plant seeds.

Have a high-protein-healthy breakfast

A high-protein breakfast can not only help you control your sugar cravings but also your appetite throughout the day. Consuming any form of protein during breakfast, in healthy amounts will ensure that your body is satiated and blood sugar levels are stabilized.

Replace sugar with spices

There are spices like cinnamon, cardamom, and nutmeg that can replace the sugary items that you are always munching on. These spices are natural sweeteners and can serve the same purpose as sugar does while also ensuring that your blood sugar is kept in check.

Keep yourself hydrated

Did you know? Having less water throughout the day can also increase your craving for sugar. It is recommended that we should drink at least eight glasses of water everyday so that we stay hydrated. Not only that, studies have also shown that people who drank enough water also lost weight and increased their metabolic rates by 30%.

Sleep well

According to a 2013 study by researchers from UC Berkley, it was found that sleep deprivation is one of the factors that affects the decision-making abilities of our brain, which make us more inclined towards unhealthy food choices. Less sleep can also cause stress, which is one of the main reasons why people crave sweets. So, make sure that you get your daily dose of 8 hours of sleep to keep your sugar addiction in check.

The above factors are some of the main reasons why we crave sugar. If you know that you have been lacking in any of these, it’s time that you work towards improving your diet.
