Benefits of Healthy Lifestyle for Diabetes

Did you know?

Having a balanced diet and exercising regularly can help you in the long run to avoid diabetes! To know more read our blog.

What is Diabetes?

Diabetes is a metabolic condition wherein the body has irregular levels of blood sugar/glucose where the hormone “insulin” is being secreted by the pancreas.

Blood sugar is vital for proper body function because it is the main source of energy which is moved from cell to cell with the help of insulin. Untreated fluctuations in glucose levels can lead to damage to the nerves, eyes, kidneys and other organs.

Types of Diabetes:-

  • Type 1 Diabetes: Around 10% of Diabetics have this condition where their immune system attacks and destroys cells in the pancreas, where insulin is produced. Although,

the cause of such an attack is still unclear.

  • Type 2 Diabetes: Here the body becomes resistant to insulin and sugar builds up in your blood.
  • Gestational Diabetes: This type of Diabetes happens to women during pregnancy when the placenta produces insulin-blocking hormones.
  • Prediabetes: The blood sugar levels are higher than normal, but not high enough for type 2 diabetes diagnosis.
  • Diabetes Insipidus: A rare condition where the kidney removes too much fluid from the body.

Effect on Lifestyle:-

Healthy Diet & Exercising:

Eating the right food at the right quantity is vital to ensure a healthy lifestyle! Not only does the portion size of the food matter, but also the combinations of food that you consume makes a difference in your blood sugar levels.

  • Carbohydrates: One of the biggest contributors to your glucose levels, it is important to measure it’s intake in your meal to ensure accurate insulin dosages if required.
  • Avoid Sugary beverages: These beverages are high in calories and offer little nutrition but can cause a spike in your blood sugar levels. Although, consuming them when you have low blood sugar can be useful.
  • Exercising Regularly: To ensure overall wellbeing, it is recommended to do moderate aerobic exercise at least 150 minutes every week.

Takeaways:-

Depending on the type of diabetes, people may need to administer insulin and take other medications to manage their condition and improve glucose absorption. If a person is living with prediabetes, they can reduce the risk of developing type 2 diabetes through regular exercise and a balanced diet.

The complications of diabetes can be severe, including kidney failure and stroke, so managing the condition is vital.

Anyone who suspects they may be living with diabetes should contact their doctor.
