HMPV Virus (Human Metapneumovirus) - Symptoms, Treatment & Prevention

Human Metapneumovirus (HMPV) is a respiratory virus in the family Paramyxoviridae and is closely related to respiratory syncytial virus (RSV). The virus was first identified in 2001, although evidence suggests it has been circulating among humans for decades. It causes primarily respiratory infections and is an important cause of disease especially in children, the elderly, and people with compromised immune systems.
Here are important facts that you should know about HMPV:
Symptoms of HMPV include minor infections associated with high fever, runny nose and cough. Other acute infection symptoms may include wheezing, difficulty breathing, and respiratory disorders such as pneumonia. The virus can spread by respiratory fluid from coughing, sneezing, or close contact with an infected person and also includes touching contaminated surfaces before touching the face.
Certain groups have higher risk of HMPV and can cause more serious respiratory illness in toddlers, young children and people with weakened immune systems.
There is currently no approved vaccine or neutralizing antibody for human metapneumovirus (HMPV), but research is ongoing to develop them. Treatment focuses on palliative care which include, treating the symptoms like cough, fever control and oxygen therapy in critical cases.
Prevention is always recommended to fight against any virus. One must follow good hygiene practices such as washing your hands frequently, maintaining distance with infected people and disinfecting various surfaces. Wearing a mask is highly recommended if you or anyone in your close contact shows the above symptoms.
Is India at risk?
Yes, India is like any other country that poses a risk of infection with human metapneumovirus (HMPV). Although HMPV is not new and has been treated around the world since its discovery, its effect depends on many factors including population density, access to medical care and public awareness.
  • High population density: Urban areas, schools, and dense public transportation are at risk for HMPV infection.
  • Climate and seasons: HMPV infections peak during the cooler months (winter and early spring). Similar outbreaks are also seen seasonally in India.
  • Vulnerable population groups: Young children, the elderly, and people with pre-existing medical conditions or weakened immune systems are especially at risk.
  • Healthcare Challenges: Limited access to advanced diagnostic in rural or under-served areas may delay detection and management of outbreaks.
  • Lack of specific treatment or vaccine: Because there is no specific antiviral drug or vaccine for HMPV, outbreak management relies on early detection, public health measures and palliative care.
