Anti-TPO Antibodies

Thyroid peroxidase (TPO) is an enzyme of the thyroid gland. It is associated with the production of thyroid hormones. Anti-TPO antibodies are produced against this enzyme. Such antibodies are responsible for tearing down of the thyroid tissue and inflammation of the thyroid gland. This is an autoimmune thyroid disorder, in which a person’s immune

system attacks thyroid gland and alters thyroid function. The test thus helps in diagnosing this disorder and distinguishing it from other forms of thyroid dysfunction.

Why is the test ordered?

A doctor prescribes this test to detect and diagnose an autoimmune disorder of the thyroid gland. Anti-TPO antibodies test is a common test for autoimmune thyroid disorders.

When is the test ordered?

How is the sample collected?

A blood sample is collected from the vein in the arm of the individual using a needle.

How to prepare for the test?

No special preparation is required for the test.
