DHEAS (De hydroepiandrosterone Sulfate Test)

Dehydroepiandrosterone Sulfate (DHEAS) is a sex hormone majorly produced by the adrenal glands, but also in smaller amounts by the testicles in men and the ovaries in women. The hormone is helpful in the development of male secondary sexual characteristics at puberty. Therefore, the hormone can be used as a marker for assessing the functioning of the adrenal glands.

Why is the test ordered?

The test is ordered along with other hormonal tests to assess the functioning of the adrenal glands and to help detect the conditions that affect the adrenal glands, such as adult onset adrenal hyperplasia and congenital adrenal hyperplasia. The test may also be recommended to help diagnose the presence of adrenal gland tumours.

In women DHEAS is used with other tests to help diagnose the presence of PCOS (polycystic ovarian syndrome). The DHEAS test may be ordered with other hormonal tests to investigate the cause of male secondary sexual characters in young girls and early puberty in young boys.

When is the test ordered?

The test may be recommended with other hormone tests when a physician wants to assess the functioning of the adrenal glands in the patient's body. DHEAS levels are measured in women who show these symptoms:
  • Excessive body or facial hair
  • Muscularity
  • Deeper voice
  • Infertility
  • Amenorrhea.
  • In young boys showing symptoms like the onset of early puberty with muscularity, deeper voice and other secondary sexual characteristics, DHEAS levels may be measured.

    How is the sample collected?

A blood sample is collected from a vein in the arm.

How to prepare for the test?

No preparations are required for the test.
