Estradiol

Estradiol (17 beta-estradiol) is a type of estrogen hormone produced by the ovaries, adrenal glands and the breasts in women. The placenta also produces estradiol during pregnancy. Estradiol is important for the function of reproductive system in women as it helps in the growth of the uterus, fallopian tube and the breasts. In men, small amounts of estradiol are produced by the testes and the adrenal glands. The Estradiol test or E2 test measures the levels of estradiol in the blood.


Why is the test ordered?

The Estradiol serum test may be ordered to evaluate the reproductive function in women including oligo-amenorrhea, hypogonadism, ovarian status, infertility assessment and menopausal status. The test is performed to check the working of adrenal glands, ovaries, placenta and uterus. The test may also be recommended for assessing feminization (gynecomastia) in males and delayed and early puberty in females and to monitor the response of fertility treatment and hormonal therapy also.

When is the test ordered?

The test may be ordered when a woman experiences abnormal or lack of menstruation, vaginal bleeding after menopause or when a girl attains early or delayed puberty. The test may also be ordered when a woman experiences infertility. In males, the test may be ordered when delayed puberty or delayed growth of sex organs is noticed or when a male shows feminine bodily characteristics (gynecomastia).

How is the sample collected?

A blood sample is collected from a vein in the arm.

How to prepare for the test?

No test preparation is required as such, but the patient taking the test should follow the instructions of the doctor explicitly.
