Gamma Glutamyl -Transpeptidase (GGT) Test

GGT is an enzyme, present in liver, kidneys, spleen, gallbladder, and pancreas. It helps the liver to metabolize toxins and drugs. As a transport molecule, it helps in moving other substances in the body. Gamma-Glutamyl transpeptidase test is performed to measure GGT levels in the blood.


Why is the test ordered?

A GGT test may be prescribed to detect a liver disease, liver damage, and bile duct obstructions. The test may be carried out as a screening test for chronic alcohol abuse and also as a monitoring test in individuals receiving treatment for alcoholic hepatitis.

When is the test ordered?

A physician may prescribe this test when an individual is presented with the signs and symptoms of a liver disease. The signs and symptoms that suggest liver disease include loss of appetite, fatigue, weakness, abdominal pain, nausea and vomiting, jaundice and dark urine.

How is the sample collected?

A blood sample is collected from the vein in the arm of the individual using a needle.

How to prepare for the test?

The person may be instructed not to eat or drink anything, except water, for up to 8 hours prior to the test. Certain medicines and alcohol can also alter the test results. Thus, it is better to abstain from alcohol and such medicines before the test. Follow the instructions of the physician.
