Glucose Fasting

Glucose is the main source of energy for the human body. Insulin produced by the pancreas makes the glucose available to the cells of the body. As soon as you eat food, the glucose level increases and the pancreas release insulin to ensure that the level remains very stable. However, when the glucose levels rise above normal, diabetes may develop. The elevated levels of glucose can damage nerves, eyes, heart, kidneys and blood vessels. Therefore, glucose testing is important to prevent complications owing to high glucose levels.

Fasting blood sugar (FBS) test is the first screening test for prediabetes and diabetes. The test is usually scheduled early in the morning after overnight fasting.

A blood glucose test measures the amount of sugar in the bloodstream. This test is used to screen for prediabetes and diabetes.

How is the sample collected?

A blood sample is collected from the vein in the arm of the individual using a needle.

How to prepare for the test?

It is advised not to eat or drink anything (except water) for up to eight hours before the test.
