Glucose Tolerance Test GTT 75 gram 3 samples

The glucose tolerance test is performed to measure the body's response to glucose. In this test, a sugary solution (75 grams) is given, and sugar levels are measured one, two and three hours post the ingestion of the sugar solution. The test is also useful in screening for type 2 diabetes and diagnose prediabetes and gestational diabetes.

Why is the test done?

The glucose tolerance test (GTT) is performed to check for gestational diabetes in pregnant women. The test may also be useful to diagnose prediabetes and diabetes.

When is the test ordered?

The test may be recommended for women who are at an increased risk of developing gestational diabetes owing to a history of gestational diabetes during a previous pregnancy and who previously gave birth to a baby weighing more than 4 kg. GTT is also used to detect diabetes and pre-diabetes in adults.

How to prepare for the test?

The person taking the test is advised not to eat and drink anything for up to eight hours leading up to the test. It is advisable to inform the doctor about all the medicines that the patient is on, as some medicines can affect test results.
