Haemoglobin(HB)

Haemoglobin is an important protein in the red blood cells that carries oxygen to cells and tissues of the body and carbon-dioxide from cells and tissues to the lungs. Normal levels of Haemoglobin are essential for efficient transportation of oxygen throughout the body, thus making the haemoglobin level a good indicator of the blood's oxygen carrying ability.

Why is the test ordered?

A haemoglobin test is used to measure the level of haemoglobin in the bloodstream. The test may be performed to monitor general health during a medical examination wherein it is included as a part of complete blood count. A haemoglobin test is also helpful in screening anaemia, a condition in which your body has fewer red blood cells than normal.

When is the test ordered?

A physician may order a haemoglobin test-
  • If the patient complains of anaemia symptoms such as shortness of breath, weakness, fatigue, lack of energy and dizziness.
  • To diagnose polycythemia vera or other blood disorders
  • If you have excessive blood loss from an injury or surgical treatment
  • How is the sample collected?
A blood sample is collected from a vein in the arm.

How to prepare for the test?

There is no special preparation required for this test. However, it is better to be well hydrated prior to getting the test done, to ensure the accuracy of the test result.
