HBs Ag Quantitative (CMIA)

The Hepatitis B antigen (quantitative) assay measures hepatitis B surface antigen (HBsAg) in chronic hepatitis B patients. The quantitative Chemiluminescence Microparticle Immunoassay CMIA is a type of immunoassay that employs light to detect the presence of hepatitis B antigens in the body. The antigen levels are expressed in international units per ml. The test is helpful in identifying inactive carriers and also for evaluating the risk of progression of infection in chronic hepatitis B patients.

Why is the test ordered?

The test may be ordered to determine whether the virus is replicating and to differentiate the various stages of infection. It is also helpful in monitoring antiviral therapy in patients.

When is the test recommended?

The test is recommended to patients diagnosed with hepatitis B infection by PCR testing or qualitative Hepatitis B antigen. The test may also be recommended to those patients being considered for treatment or being treated with antiviral drugs.

How is the sample collected?

A blood sample is collected from a vein in the arm.

How to prepare for the test?
