Hepatitis E Virus IgM

An infection with the hepatitis E virus (HEV) results in the manifestation of symptoms following an incubation period ranging anywhere between 15 days to two months. The symptoms appear along with the presence of anti-Hepatitis E Virus IgM antibody, followed by the appearance of the anti-Hepatitis E Virus IgG after a few more days. The anti-Hepatitis E virus IgM is usually short-lived, lasting for about 180 days from the onset of symptoms, whereas IgG can survive for several years after the infection. Therefore, to determine a recent instance of the infection or acute infection, Anti-HEV IgM is a physician’s best marker of choice for the hepatitis E virus infection.

Why is the test ordered?

The test is helpful in the diagnosis of recent or acute hepatitis E virus infection.

How is the sample collected?

A blood sample is collected from a vein in the arm.
