HS CRP

CRP is an acute phase protein, and therefore, is useful in detection and evaluation of infection, tissue injury and inflammation. It also helps physicians evaluate the risk for heart disease or stroke or any other condition associated with inflammation. Low levels of inflammation play a significant role in atherosclerosis and are associated with cardiovascular disease. High sensitivity C-reactive protein test is very sensitive as it accurately measures persistently low levels of HS CRP to detect low levels of inflammation.

Why is the test ordered?

An HS CRP test is ordered by physicians to assess a person’s risk of developing heart disease. The test may also be recommended along with other tests including cholesterol tests and Lp-PLA2 (lipoprotein associated phospholipase) test, for gaining more inputs about the risk of developing cardiovascular disease.

Persistently low level of inflammation is associated with a major risk of heart disease (atherosclerosis). The HS CRP test is used to determine persistently low levels of C- reactive protein accurately.

When is the test ordered?

The test may be recommended to men over 50 years or women over 55 years, who carry moderate to intermediate risk of developing heart disease.

How is the sample collected?

A blood sample is drawn from a vein on the inside of the elbow.

How to prepare for the test?

No special preparations are required for this test.
