Hydroxyproline is an amino acid present in a protein called collagen in the body. The protein collagen is found abundantly throughout the body and constitutes an important component of cartilage, bones and skin. The destruction of collagen owing to some disorders causes the release of hydroxyproline in the urine. Therefore, hydroxyproline levels in the urine can be used to diagnose such disorders.
