Influenza A Virus

Influenza A virus or flu virus is prominent during flu season and spreads quickly. Physicians usually diagnose patients based on typical flu like symptoms during a flu season. However, if a physician wants to confirm that the infection is due to influenza virus only and not due to any other cause, then they may recommend influenza A test.

Why the test is ordered?

Influenza A test may be ordered by the physicians when they suspect influenza virus infection in a patient. The purpose of the test is to ensure early diagnosis and initiation of antiviral therapy early on during the infection. The other reason behind using the test is to rule out bacterial infection.

When is the test ordered?

A flu test may be done within first few days of the onset of typical influenza like signs and symptoms during a flu season. The test may be recommended for people who are weak, hospitalized, have low immunity and who are at increased risk of developing serious illness. The signs and symptoms include fever, headache, weakness, sore throat, stuffy nose, cough, chills and muscle pain.

How to prepare for the test?

No special preparations are required for this test.

How is the sample collected?

A cotton swab is used to collect sample. A healthcare professional will rub a cotton swab up the nose or along the throat to collect the fluid rich in the virus. The sample is collected, packed and send to the lab for testing.
