LDH Lactate Dehydrogenase Fluid Serum

Lactate dehydrogenase helps in providing energy to the body. The activity of the lactate dehydrogenase enzyme is seen in all cells and high concentrations of LDH are present in blood cells, heart cells, muscle cells, kidney cells, liver cells and lung cells. The levels of this enzyme are elevated in several health conditions.

Why is the test ordered?

The test is a helpful marker for the presence and severity of chronic or acute tissue damage. It is used as a non-specific test to assess different conditions and diseases. The test may also be recommended for other conditions including anaemia and blood cancer.

When is the test recommended?

A physician may order an LDH test in association with other tests like CMP – comprehensive metabolic panel if some sort of tissue damage is suspected owing to a certain disease or condition. Following the results of LDH, more specific tests may be recommended to help diagnose the condition and treat the organs involved. An LDH test may also be recommended to a person who has experienced a muscle injury or trauma or when the symptoms point to haemolytic anaemia.

How is the sample collected?

A blood sample is collected from a vein in the arm.

How to prepare for the test?

No special preparations are required for this test.
