Microalbumin Test

Healthy kidneys filter waste and hold on to important components, including albumin; but when the kidneys get damaged and work less efficiently, the albumin leaks through the kidneys and is excreted in the urine. A microalbumin test measures the albumin levels (in small/micro quantity) excreted in the urine.

Why is the test ordered?

A microalbumin test detects albumin in the urine and helps in detecting early signs of kidney damage and kidney disease.

When is the test ordered?

The test may be recommended for individuals who are at risk of developing kidney disease, such as patients with longstanding diabetes. The test may be ordered by a physician when he or she notices warning signs and symptoms of kidney damage in an individual.

How is the sample collected?

A urine sample is collected into a sterile container. The sample is collected in different ways to perform the test, either a random sample (A sample of urine collected at any time of the day) is collected or a timed urine sample (such as 4 hours or overnight), or a complete 24-hour urine sample is collected in a clean container.

How to prepare for the test?

There is no special precaution to be taken before taking the Microalbumin Test.
