PAPP A Test

PAPP-A is a protein produced by both the placenta and the embryo. This protein performs some important functions including masking the immune system from recognizing the fetus as a foreign body, angiogenesis, and fetal growth. The serum concentration of this protein can be used as important biomarkers for pregnancy related abnormalities like premature birth, preeclampsia, intrauterine growth restriction.

Papp-a test is a part of the first-trimester screening test (performed between 11 to 14 weeks) that considers various factors and estimates a pregnant woman's risk of developing an abnormality. Screening tests do not diagnose a problem but signal a potential warning that further testing must be done to diagnose the cause of the abnormality.

Why is the test ordered?

PAPP-A test is ordered as a maternal screening test along with other tests to screen a pregnant woman for chromosomal abnormalities or genetic disorders like Down syndrome (trisomy 21). The test is one of the options for prenatal Down syndrome screening.

When is the test recommended?

The test is usually recommended between 11th and 14th weeks of pregnancy.

How is the sample collected?

A blood sample is drawn from a vein in the arm.
