Our body uses glucose as the main source of energy. Insulin produced by the pancreas makes the glucose available to the cells of the body. When a person eats food, glucose levels increase and the pancreas release insulin to ensure that the levels remain under control. But when the glucose levels remain too high over a period of time, the person may develop diabetes. Elevated levels of glucose can damage the nerves, eyes, heart, kidneys and blood vessels. Therefore, glucose testing is important to prevent fatal complications owing to the high glucose levels in the body.
Random Blood Sugar (RBS) test measures blood glucose levels at any time of the day irrespective of when a person last ate.
Why is the test performed?
The test is helpful in detecting variations in the blood glucose levels and indicating a problem, thus proving helpful in the diagnosis of diabetes. Random Blood Sugar testing is an integral part of diabetes management as it is also useful in monitoring the success of diabetes treatment in a patient.
How is the sample collected?
A blood sample is collected from a vein in the arm.
