Routine Stool Examination

In a routine stool examination, a stool sample is chemically examined to check its pH and the presence of blood, and microscopically, to check for pus cells, red blood cells, parasites etc.

Why is the test ordered?

A routine stool examination is recommended when your physician observes signs and symptoms like
  • Abdominal pain
  • Bloody diarrhoea
  • Loss of appetite
  • Fever
  • A routine stool examination is useful in finding the cause of diarrhoea, detecting parasites and knowing the cause of symptoms affecting the gastrointestinal tract.

    How is the sample collected?

Take a dry and clean container for stool sample collection. Do not urinate while collecting the stool. To avoid this, urinate first and once you're done, pass stool into the container. Close the lid and then wash your hands. It is advisable to wear gloves while collecting the stool sample.

How to prepare for the test?

When the doctor recommends a stool examination, he should be informed about all the medicines and/or supplements that the patient might be taking.
