Thyroxine Binding Glubulin ( TBGI )

T3 and T4 are the hormones produced by the thyroid gland that helps regulate the functions of the body. Thyroxine Binding Globulin (TBG) is a protein that carries thyroid hormones in the blood. Few hormones, do not bind to the proteins and are referred to as free. Thyroxine Binding Globulin test is used to measure TBG level in the blood and to diagnose problems associated with the thyroid gland.

Why is the test recommended?

Keeping a check on Thyroxine Binding Globulin level helps in differentiating TBG imbalances from thyroid dysfunctions. It is because several diseases and medicines can alter serum TBGlevels. A TBG test may be helpful when the total thyroid hormone levels are not in agreement with the thyro-metabolic status, especially during the use of contraceptive steroids or during pregnancy or hepatitis.

When is the test ordered?

A physician may prescribe a TBG test to assess thyroid issues if the signs and symptoms indicate a thyroid disorder.

How is the sample collected?

A blood sample is drawn from a vein in the arm.

How to prepare for the test?

One must inform the doctor about all the medicines and supplements one is taking before taking the test as it may alter the test results.
