Total Immunoglobulin E (IgE)

Immunoglobulin E (IgE) is a type of antibody produced by the immune system when it perceives a threat from an allergen or a parasite.

The Total Immunoglobulin E test is used to measure the levels of IgE in the bloodstream.

Why is the test ordered?

The total IgE test is helpful in screening and detecting allergies as it measures immunoglobulin E levels in the blood.

When is the test ordered?

The test may be ordered when the symptoms associated with the condition of the patient are frequent and persistent probably due to an allergic reaction. Such symptoms indicate the involvement of lungs, skin and digestive system. The symptoms include:
  • Skin rashes
  • Persistent itching
  • Sneezing
  • Hives
  • Vomiting
  • Nausea
  • Congestion
  • Difficulty in breathing, and

  • In some cases, an IgE test may be recommended as a screening test if the patient is suffering from persistent diarrhoea, the cause of which could be parasitic.

    How is the sample collected?

A blood sample is connected from a vein in the arm.

How to prepare for the test?

No preparation is required for the IgE test.
