Uric Acid

Uric acid that comes in blood from the metabolic breakdown of cells and food is filtered by the kidneys and gets excreted. A little amount of uric acid passes out in the stool as well. Uric acid levels in blood increase if an excess amount of it is produced or when the kidneys do not function normally. If the uric acid levels elevate, solid crystals are formed in the joints and kidney stones are also formed. The formation of solid uric acid crystals in the joint may lead to Gout.

The uric Acid test is used to measure the uric acid levels in a blood sample.

Why is the test performed?

The test may be ordered to check for the presence of excess levels of uric acid in the blood. It proves helpful in diagnosing and monitoring gout and checking whether high uric acid levels are causing kidney stones. The test may also be helpful to determine the effectiveness of uric acid lowering medicines.

When is the test performed?

A physician may order a uric acid test when:
  • He or she suspects that an individual has high uric acid levels.
  • Recommended for those who suffer from recurrent kidney stones
  • Patients with gout-like symptoms that require monitoring
  • How is the sample collected?

A blood sample is collected from a vein in the arm.

How to prepare for the test?

No special preparation is needed for the test.
