Urine Culture and Sensitivity

A urine sample is cultured in a sterile growth media to detect the growth of microorganisms like yeast and bacteria in a urine sample and testing the sensitivity of those microbes to antibiotics.

Why is the test ordered?

A urine culture is helpful in diagnosing a urinary tract infection and identifying the microorganism causing the infection. The susceptibility testing helps in determining the susceptibility of microbes to antibiotics.

When is the test recommended?

A urine culture test may be recommended when a person is suspected to have a urinary tract infection and exhibits the following signs and symptoms:
  • Frequent urination
  • Burning sensation during urination
  • Strong urge to urinate with less urine
  • Dark, cloudy, discoloured urine with a strong odour
  • Abdominal and lower back pain.
  • How is the sample collected?

A mid-stream urine sample by following a clean catch process is collected into a sterile container provided by the lab.

How to prepare for the test?

It is advisable to not urinate for at least an hour before the test. To produce enough urine, drink a glass of water 15 to 20 minutes before collecting the sample.
